Household’s Balance Sheet Survey 2011

Household’s Balance Sheet Survey (HBSS) 2011 is one of Bank Indonesia’s programs to monitor risks at household level that could affect Indonesian financial system stability.

The experience of various countries shows that households’ financial risks and problems could influence the financial stability of a country as a whole. Therefore, more regular and intensive analyses and surveillance on household’s finance development is becoming more crucial.

The analyses of household’s finance offer great benefits for Bank Indonesia in monitoring the financial system stability.

The resulting data of HBSS can provide space to analyze the household finance at micro level, which is so far rather difficult to carry out by using available macro data. Thus, HBSS’ results complement the financial system analyses by giving more comprehensive perspectives from household finance aspect.

HBSS 2011 is the fifth yearly survey. It is the continuation of the similar survey that was conducted from 2007.

The purpose of the survey is to develop household’s balance sheet in Indonesia, in particular the households that have access to and could influence the banking system.

The survey also aims to build basic database that is useful for designing the financial surveillance system. Bank Indonesia has set HBSS 2009 sample as the basis for the sample for the next HBSS.This aims to develop a database of panel longitudinal survey, where each household sample is to be surveyed every year in order to have a more thorough and consistent pictures about the dynamics of household finance development.

HBSS 2011 is carried out in 10 provinces, i.e. North Sumatera, West Sumatera, South Sumatera, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, and Bali. The survey covered 4,114 households. It was carried out during the period of October to December 2011.
